Thursday 1st September – Old Stokesley Road – Temporary Closure

Just received from Middlesbrough Council

Old Stokesley Road in Nunthorpe Village will be closed to traffic for a number of hours this Thursday, 1st September, to allow works to remove a large dead tree to be carried out safely.

The attached plan shows the location of the road closure, which will be just to the south of the entrance to Nunthorpe Hall.  The closure will come into effect at 09:00 hours and will remain in place until works are complete – this is likely to be between 15:00 and 16:00 hours, although the exact duration of the closure will be dependent on any difficulties encountered by the contractor when removing the tree.

A signposted diversion route via A172 Stokesley Road will be in operation whilst the closure is in place.  The diversion route is also shown on the attached plan.

Apologies for the short notice, but the condition of the tree means that delaying the works to remove it is not an option.

New CCTV at The Southern Cross Junction

Great Local Teamwork

At a recent meeting of Marton & Nunthorpe Neighbourhood Watch, Morgan McClintock the Chair of the Parish Council, brought up the subject of the obsolete CCTV camera located at the Southern Cross Junction. This is something that has been raised by the Parish Council on a number of occasions following damage to trees, ASB, fly tipping, and drivers failing to stop when pedestrians are using the zebra crossing.
Mayor Andy Preston and Deputy Mayor Mieka Smiles, who were both present at the meeting, undertook to follow up this issue with the relevant Officers of Middlesbrough Council, and we this week received confirmation that a request has been raised for new cameras at the Southern Cross Junction.
A new PTZ camera with three static cameras will be installed. The equipment is due for delivery by the end of June so the camera is scheduled to be upgraded and operational by the end of July. This camera will be able to view activities taking place around a significant section of Nunthorpe, Marton East and Marton West as well as the operation of the traffic lights.
By working together in a constructive way we have achieved a positive outcome.

Latest Swans Corner Updates – much remains unclear!

Access to the Academies

Nunthorpe Academy has circulated a letter to all parents/carers advising about the procedure for dropping off pupils whilst Guisborough Road is closed to through traffic (we believe the closure to be imminent). You can read it by clicking here. It includes a very useful diagram showing the proposed morning flow flow drop off traffic.

Mrs Kell, Head of School, has said “We encourage as many students as possible to walk or use public transport.” The underlying message is PLEASE DO NOT USE YOUR CARS TO DROP PUPILS OFF ANYWHERE NEAR THE ACADEMY. (This is our advice). If you must use your car to get close (for example if your child cannot walk safely), then this diagram shows a one way loop, with cars pausing to drop off on Guisborough Road in the section marked in magenta, and then returning via the loop outside the school WITHOUT STOPPING THERE. It is vital that there are no exceptions to this guidance.

Pedestrian access from Ormesby Bank will be maintained at all times by Esh, the main contractors.

There is no current advice about picking pupils up from the Academy (we have sought clarity and none has been forthcoming). Our best advice is as above – AVOID USING CARS. Otherwise arrange to pick up your children as far away as you can from the school – certainly do not drive past Gypsy Lane. Wherever you do decide to pick up, make sure that you can both park and wait safely and legally.

Buses

It is clear that buses will not travel to this part of Guisborough Road. We have no information from Arriva on their plans despite the imminence of the closure. It is likely that all buses that would normally come along Guisborough Road will divert at Stokesley Road and go round the bypass. Redcar & Cleveland Council are seeking a contract with a coach company to run some sort of shuttle bus service along Guisborough Road to the bus stop(s) still in use. We will update you as soon as we know more. We are in touch with both the Academy and R&C Council.

Drivers please note: New Speed Limits are now in place locally

Our followers will remember that at the end of December we warned that reduced speed limits would be introduced on many roads in Nunthorpe. These new speed limits are now in place – please be aware of the new roadsigns including this one:

New 30 mph speed limit in force This is especially relevant to the significant change made to the A172 Dixons Bank speed limit which has reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph from the Stainton Way/Southern Cross traffic lights all the way via Poole Roundabout, to just beyond the roundabout with the exit to Nunthorpe Village.

In addition to the information we shared before and have repeated below, the whole length of Brass Castle Lane has been now limited to 40mph.

Here’s a repeat of the information we provided last time with the addition of the Brass Castle Lane map:

  • A172 Dixons Bank from the Stainton Way/Southern Cross junction to the turn into Nunthorpe Village – 30 mph (currently 40 mph).
  • From the A172 Old Stokesley Road roundabout to the edge of Nunthorpe village – 30 mph; through Nunthorpe Village (West Side) – 20 mph; continuing from Nunthorpe Village along Old Stokesley Road to the Middlesbrough Boundary (just before the Treebridge Hotel) – 30 mph
  • Church Lane – 20 mph
  • Brass Castle Lane – 40 mph

The following maps show the changes (maps credit Middlesbrough Borough Council, edited).
